چکیده

A series of investigations (4, 5, 6, 7, 8) has been concerned with identifying and quantifying some of the variables which determine performance in verbal learning. In the first of these studies, Noble (4) developed a rational scale of meaningfulness (m) consisting of 96 dissyllabic nouns and paralogs ordered in terms of frequency of continued written associations in 60 sec. The m scale meets the need for an extensive range of verbal stimuli, from paralogs to frequently used words. It fulfills the requirement of high stability as well, having an estimated intergroup reliability coefficient of .993 (n = 119)." Recently, Handler (3) has applied this technique to 100 English syllables (n = 34), while Umemoto, Morikawa, and Ibuki (10) have done the same for 1,892 Japanese syllables (« « 100). In his second investigation, Noble (5) found that variations in m pro-

Effects of Meaningfulness of Relevant and Irrelevant Stimuli in a Modified Concept Formation Task

Meaningfulness (m) of component stimuli was manipulated in a modified compound-stimulus paired-associate task. Stimuli consisted of two CVC syllables, with one being relevant in that it was consistently paired with a number response, and the other being irrelevant in that it was paired equally often with each relevant syllable, and hence with each number response. The 5" was required to identif...

Memory encoding following complete callosotomy.

Three patients with complete resection of the corpus callosum were tested in a series of memory tasks to determine the effects of callosotomy on the encoding and retrieval of information in memory. Verbal and pictorial conjunction tests were administered to measure patients' ability to consolidate the elements of a stimulus into an accurate composite memory. Patients were also tested in a paire...
